a174 while snugly reclining under the feather eiderdown that was trying
its best to cover the enormous superking-sized bed. (But only if Mrs
H broke the habit of a lifetime and let me control the remote…)
Every lodge has its own pre-heated hot tub in a private
courtyard, and Mrs H wasted no time before enjoying a soak after
our drive while I walked the 100 yards to the drawing room of the
main house where Bre and Graham chatted about some of Pentre
Mawr’s finer points over a G&T – easy on the T.
It transpired our puppy, Mollie the collie, would have been
welcome – although one wonders what terrors may have ensued in
such select surroundings! Nevertheless, our charming hosts are
animal lovers through and through: in addition to four ponies –
Cosyup The canvas
Kyle, Opti, Orion and Osprey – they have three delightful collies of
lodges have comforts
both inside and out
their own – Molly, Milly and Maisie – plus cats Oscar (a grand
17-year-old), Wellington the Siamese and Morris, a real lion
of a tabby.
Dog lovers are simply asked to leave their four-legged friend in
the room or car during dinner but they are welcome to join in the
fun any other time – and Molly would certainly have had a lovely
romp with the three well-behaved resident hounds.
Besides dogs, guests are invited to bring their own horses for the
duration of their stay to take advantage of the many country walks
to be found on the 200-acre estate or along the Clwydian range.
The views alone make it attractive – you can see as far as
Blackpool – but when our hosts throw in the offer of a Range Rover
lift to the top, the better to enjoy a relaxing stroll down, our plans
for the following day are settled.
Beauty all around
Speaking as I was earlier of our dear friend Major Woolley,
renowned hunter with rifle or rod and line, he would undoubtedly
enjoy Pentre Mawr’s lovely rural setting and activities: the Clwyd
river if well-stocked with trout and available to any guest sporting a
nationwide fishing licence (available to all, I’m told, on the
Environment Agency website).
After our chinwag, I wander back past the croquet lawn, under
the ancient and enormous copper beeches next to the spot where
the ha-ha will be reinstated, to enquire as to Mrs H’s readiness
for dinner.
Radiant after her hot tub exfoliations and elegant in a black
sequined dinner dress, we stroll past the grounds’ lighting to the
house. There, Graham took our drinks order (white wine spritzer
for Mrs H, G-and-virtually-no-T for me) and showed us a portrait of
Robert Napier, his great-great-great-great-grandfather a174
