Iggy Pop
Preliminaires
A love of old New Orleans jazz and the resonance of a contemporary
novel are the catalysts for this fabulous new album by all time legend,
Iggy Pop. On tour with his band The Stooges , Iggy found himself resting
up between incendiary performances in an old hotel on the north coast of
France with a novel by Michael Houllebeq ,‘The Possibility of an Island’.
“The book is about death, sex, the end of the human race, and some other
pretty funny stuf_f. I read the book with intense pleasure when it came out,
and in my mind, I created music that would have been the music that I
would hear in my soul when I read this book".
The title ‘Preliminaires’ means Foreplay in French, and the album has been
done especially (though not exclusively) for France and French-speaking
people. Iggy’s deep, rich voice is a delight on his versions of jazz standards
‘Les Feuilles Mortes’ and ‘How Insensitive’ while ‘King of The Dogs’ is a
contagious, brassy stomp. Flashes of the old Iggy arise, particularly on
rocker ‘Nice To Be Dead’, but over all ‘Preliminaires’ is exactly the album The
Godfather of Punk should be making in his early 60’s. Cool, elegant,
sensitive, poetic and whip crack smart, just like the man himself.
