Congratulations, it’s a new
baby... planet?
OR THE FIRST TIME, astronomers peering into disks of
gas and dust around young stars have captured infraredF
images of dusty clumps that could be planets in the making or
heavier objects known as brown dwarfs.
Images taken of the star AB Aurigae, some 460 light-years
from Earth, show a gap in the the disk along with a barely dis-
cernible point of light at the center, suggesting a place where
gas and dust have begun to settle into a small body.
Another team of astronomers observed radio emissions
from pebble-sized rocks in a disk around the star HL Tau,
about 520 light-years from Earth, noting that these clumps of
gas and dust are “exactly how a very young photoplanet should
look:” Source: Science News (April 5, 2008)
