Spathas was born in Portland in 1932. He
graduated from Washington High School in
1950, attended Oregon State University, and
graduated from University of Oregon in 1958.
In 1957, he married Claudia Mickelson and
they opened Claudia’s Tavern the following
Townhomes & Condominiums
year. Spathas also founded and owned the
Kitchen Kettle, Steak & Skewer and Beef &
N.W. 24th and Westover
Brew restaurants. Claudia died in 1971.
Spathas married Elaine Nadeau in 1974.
Spathas served as president of both the
Restaurant Association of Oregon and the
Portland Beaver Huddle in the 1970s. He
was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Greek
Orthodox Church.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Matt, Jeff
and Martin; brother, John; sister, Dianne
Schweitzer; and nine grandchildren.
Robert A. Herzog died April 8. He was
a senior family preferred member who joined
the club in 1970.
Herzog was born in Portland in 1919.
He attended Grant High School and gradu-
ated from University of Oregon in 1940. He
married Ann Ernest in 1940, and went over-
seas to fight in the war, returning in 1944.
After the war, Herzog started his career
in the automobile business working for
Billingsley Pontiac until he opened his first
used car lot in Beaverton in 1957. In 1997 he
built his current facility, which in 1999 became
the current Herzog-Meier dealership.
Survivors include his wife; son, Michael;
sister, Billie Marx; and two grandchildren. YOUÕRE GOING TO LOVE THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Edward S. Smith died April 9. He was a
senior family preferred member who joined MJ STEEN
the club in 1967. P

the war, and in 1945 they moved to the Bay
Area. In 1960, he and his family moved to
Portland, where he oversaw the development

the 1970s, Smith became chief executive officer
and chairman of Omark, a position he held

until his retirement in 1985.
Smith served on several boards, including

Clark College, and Georgia Gulf Corporation.
