r. Ray V. Grewe died Oct. 16, 2008. He
was a senior family preferred member
who joined the club in 1964.
Grewe was born in Arlington, Wash.,
in 1923. He graduated from University
of Washington with a bachelor’s degree in
zoology in 1943. He received his medical
degree in 1947 from University of Oregon
Medical School (now OHSU). His neurosur-
gery residency at Good Samaritan Hospital
began in 1948, but was interrupted in 1951 by
the Korean War. He served near the front lines
in Korea in a mobile Marine surgical hospital
for two years. He was awarded the U.S. Legion
of Merit for his innovative surgical work and
for establishing a mobile neurosurgical unit.
His active military duty ended at the
Chelsea Naval Hospital in Boston. In 1953, he
married Chloris Roberts. In 1954, he returned
to Portland to conclude his neurosurgery resi-
dency in 1955.
Grewe helped the developing pediatric
neurosurgery program in Portland and worked
with the Portland Shriners Hospital for
Children. His son Kent joined him in private
practice in 1990. Grewe retired in 2003.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Scott, Kent
and Todd; daughters, Kathy Grewe, Nancy
Battaglia and Lorrie Shoemaker; brother, Dan;
sister, Janet Swanson; and 13 grandchildren.
Carlo S. Bossola died recently. He was a
nonresident family member who joined the
club in 1963.
Ted H. Blank died March 3. He was a
senior family resident who joined the club in
2008.
Blank was born in Portland in 1951. He
worked in technology and marketing.
Survivors include his wife, Sandee; sons,
Seth and Zachary; daughter, Amory; and
mother, Barbara Mills.
Floyd “Beau” Williams died April 4. He
was a nonresident member who joined the club
in 1984.
Williams was born in Portland in 1932. He
attended Central Catholic High School. He
spent two years in the Naval Reserve on Guam.
He graduated from Oregon State University,
and worked for Western/Delta Airlines for 35
years. He married Rosalie Salvi in 1963.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Michael
and Jason; sister, Corrinne Repp; and two
grandchildren.
Gene T. Spathas died April 7. He was a
senior family preferred member who joined
the club in 1971.
