SOC160 GLOBALIZATION 3 UNITS
Hours: 3 lec CSU
Overview of global processes binding our world into one interconnected whole and theoretical perspectives
on these processes. Topics include colonialism, political economy, economic development, human rights,
ethnic/religious diaspora, environmental issues, tourism, media, and resistance to globalization.
SOC 291-295 DIRECTED 1-5 UNITS
Hours: 54-270 total hours STUDY CSU
A student may take advanced course work in Sociology, after completing the introductory courses.
Occasionally, students may enroll without completing the beginning courses with written approval of the
instructor, Division Chair and the Dean of Instruction. Prerequisite: Demonstrated ability in area of study.

SPAN 010AB CONVERSATIONAL 1 UNIT
Hours: 1 lec SPANISH
This course is best suited for those who have little or no knowledge of Spanish; although, advanced students
might wish to take it if they want more practice in conversation, and native speakers might find it useful.

SPAN 011AB CONVERSATIONAL 1 UNIT
Hours: 1 lec SPANISH
This course is a continuation of Spanish 010 AB and is best suited for those who have little or no knowledge of Spanish;
although advanced students might wish to take it if they want more practice in conversation, and native speakers
might find it useful for basic grammar, and spelling and vocabulary. Prerequisite: SPAN 010 or instructor approval.

SPAN 014A SURVIVAL SPANISH 1 UNIT
Hours: 18 total lec hours
Survival Spanish is a course designed for persons who have little or no background or experience in
the Spanish language. This one-unit course will provide intensive comprehensible input in Spanish in
an immersion setting. Typical survival scenarios addressed will include the following: ordering food in a
restaurant, asking for directions, shopping, short telephone conversations, transportation needs, travel
encounters, medical emergencies, security and safety settings, current events and other topics as suggested
and needed by the class population.
SPAN 100 SPANISH FOR HEALTH 3 UNITS
Hours: 3 lec CARE WORKERS
This course is designed for health care workers who want to learn basic phrases in Spanish as related to their
daily activities. The course activities are divided into two major sections: 1) students learn dialogs related to
specific health care tasks (e.g., assessing medical history, assessing health risks, making appointments, etc.);
2) students complete a portfolio focusing on communicating in Spanish and communicating with Spanish-
speaking patients. This course is not a Spanish language class per se, but is designed to teach health care
workers how to do specific tasks in Spanish.
SPAN 101 BEGINNING 4 UNITS
CAN SPAN 2 SPANISH I CSU, UC
Hours: 4 lec
Introduction to the language through study and practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing
Spanish. Designed to instruct in basic pronunciation, grammar, and conversation. Includes an introduction
to Hispanic cultures. Formerly Spanish 001A.
