PE 136 LIFEGUARD 1.5 UNITS
TRAINING CSU, UC
Hours: 25.5 total lec hours, 9 total lab hours
Provides the necessary minimum skills training for a person to qualify as a non-surf lifeguard. To teach
lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Prerequisite:
Must be at least 15 years of age; required skills: swim 500 yards, surface dive 7’ and return with a 10# brick,
tread water 2 minutes without the use of arms. Repeatable.
PE 137 INTERMEDIATE SPORTS 2 UNITS
Hours: 6 lab CONDITIONING CSU, UC
Class designed to advance athletic performance. All phases of strength and power are reviewed and
addressed through strength, agility, balance, plyometric and speed training. Progression of exercises will
be based upon performance testing after completion of beginning sport conditioning class. Formerly PE
137AD. Repeatable.
PE 138 WATER SAFETY 1 UNIT
INSTRUCTION CSU, UC
Hours: 15 total lec hours, 24 total lab hours
Provides the necessary skills to teach the American Red Cross water safety courses. Prerequisite: Water
safety instructor (WSI) candidates must be at least 17 years of age by the last day of class to be eligible for
WSI certification. Repeatable.
PE 139 ASIAN MARTIAL ARTS- 1 UNIT
Hours: 3 lab WEAPONS CSU
Throughout history, weapons have been used as an extension of the body. The study of martial arts enables
one to become prepared physically and mentally for challenges that arise in life. The use of traditional
weapons expands upon these principles. The student will learn the historical context of weapons from
various Asian countries including: the bo, escrima, shinai, broad sword, fai-gi, bokken, naginata, and many
others. The student will learn techniques for the proper use of these weapons in two-person routines and
for executing attacking and defensive moves. Students will become proficient in the use of several weapons,
with a more in-depth study and focus on a particular weapon that will change each semester. Prerequisite:
Recommend Asian Martial Arts or instructor’s approval. Repeatable.
PE 141 PRINCIPLES OF 3 UNITS
Hours: 3 lec FITNESS & PERFORMANCE CSU
Through lecture and discussion the class will explore the physiological, psychological, and sociological
values of fitness and principles of performance training. The student will study and implement the guidelines
on how to commence or maintain a program of a healthy and enjoyable exercise program. The student will
participate in fitness assessment and exercise prescription. Other topics of study will include exercise and
the environment, exercise for diverse populations, and sport nutrition.
PE 143 PRINCIPLES OF .5-1 UNIT
Hours: 2.5 – 5 field FITNESS & CSU
PERFORMANCE LAB
Students will perform fitness related activities and performance related training. Students will implement
the guidelines on how to commence and maintain a program of a healthy and enjoyable exercise program.
The student will participate in fitness assessment and exercise prescription. Repeatable.
PE 146 INTERMEDIATE .5-1 UNIT
Hours: 3 lab, 9 or 18 weeks ULTIMATE DISC CSU, UC
Ultimate Disc intermediate skill level. Develop individual throwing, catching and offensive/defensive team
strategy. Prerequisite: PE 142 or demonstrate a basic understanding of Ultimate Disc. Repeatable.
PE 148 ADVANCED .5-1 UNIT
Hours: 3 lab, 9 or 18 weeks ULTIMATE DISC CSU, UC
Ultimate Disc advanced skill level. Develop individual throwing, catching and offensive/defensive team
strategy. Prerequisite: PE 142 or PE 146AD. Repeatable.
