PHIL 101 LOGIC 3 UNITS

Fundamental concepts and techniques employed in the analysis and evaluation of rational
argumentation;structural analysis of language use and misuse as related to validity and argumentation;and
an approach to thinking cogently and critically about claims and assertions in daily life. Among the topics
are inductive and deductive argument, implication and entailment.
PHIL 102 ETHICS & SOCIAL 3 UNITS

Introduction to philosophical analysis of ethics/morality and the formal principles of theorizing and
reasoning values in personal and social contexts. Course will present various approaches within the field of
philosophy. Topics may include: legal reasoning, medical ethics, feminism/sexuality, relative and absolute
moral argumentation.
PHIL 103 COMPARATIVE 3 UNITS

Philosophic analysis and study of religious practices, beliefs, and rituals in the human community. Traditions
examined through objective historical, textual and cognate approaches. Topics include Judaism, Christianity,
Zen, Islam, Hinduism, Confucianism, Graeco-Roman Mythology, Buddhism, and Archaic Religions.
PHIL 120 THE ART 3 UNITS
Hours: 2.5 lec, 1.5 lab OF TAI CHI CSU, UC
Presenting the ancient Chinese philosophical concept of Tai Chi, the Great Ultimate, with its interplay of
yin/yang as illustrated in Taoist and other classical literature and as expressed in Tai Chi Chuan, a meditative
movement and internal art. Repeatable.
PHIL 122 19TH & 20TH CENTURY 3 UNITS
Hours: 3 lec AFRICAN HISTORY CSU, UC
& RELIGION
A survey of 19th and 20th century African history and religion. Focus will be placed upon the study of
African traditional beliefs; the impact of Islam and Christianity; the colonial period;the post-colonial and
contemporary period; the emergence of neo-colonialism; the rise of dictatorships; and the role of the army
in African politics. Cross-listed with HIST 122.
PHIL 150 INTRODUCTION 3 UNITS
Hours: 3 lec TO CHRISTIANITY CSU, UC
A survey of major philosophical tenets of Christianity. Among the issues examined will be the philosophy
of Judaism, the development of early Christianity, the Protestant Reformation, and modern trends in
Christianity.

Hours: 3 lab FOR STUDENT ATHLETES
This course focuses on the fundamental principles of study habits as they apply to student athletes at the
college level. Skills to be addressed include goal setting, time management, reading for specific purposes,
note taking, information synthesizing, report writing, preparation for exams, critical thinking skills and
vocational exploration. Repeatable.
