ORL 120 RECREATION PROGRAM 3 UNITS
Hours: 2 lec, 3 lab PLANNING CSU
Designed to equip students with a variety of program planning methodologies and skills. Emphasis is on
the planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of recreation programs. Theories are applied in
an experiential setting. Repeatable.
ORL 121 SNOWBOARDING .5 – 1 UNIT
Hours: 1.5 – 3 lab CSU, UC
Introduction to fundamentals of snowboarding. Snowboarding basics will include learning terminology,
how to purchase equipment and gear, safety skills, trip organization, and cold weather preparation. Physical
conditioning, balance and boarding techniques will be introduced for beginners. Students must provide
own snowboard and outdoor gear. Repeatable.
ORL130 ADVENTURE BASED 6 UNITS
Hours: 36 lec, 216 lab OUTDOOR RECREATION CSU, UC
Students participate in a variety of field based activities aimed at improving teaching and leading skills
in a variety of outdoor adventure activities including: White Water kayaking and rafting, backpacking,
winter travel and camping techniques cross-country and telemark skiing, as well as rock climbing and
mountaineering techniques. A majority of the class time is spent in field based activities. Repeatable.
ORL 132 COLLEGE 1 UNIT
OUTINGS PROGRAM LEADERSHIP CSU
Hours: 9 total lec hours, 27 total lab hours
This course provides students an opportunity to understand all aspects of leading trips for a college outings
program. Students will act as trip leaders on a variety of outdoor trips with the Feather River Outings Group
(FROG) and for community groups. Repeatable.
ORL 140 INTRODUCTION 1 UNIT
TO SEA KAYAKING CSU
Hours: 9 total lec hours, 27 total lab hours
Students will be exposed to the fundamentals of sea kayak touring, including equipment use, proper paddling
techniques, self and assisted rescue, and group traveling techniques. These skills will be learned in the
classroom and applied on the water with an emphasis on learning safe and efficient techniques which can all
be later applied to the ocean environment. Class will be conducted on local lakes and reservoirs. Repeatable.
ORL 142 INTERMEDIATE 1 UNIT
SEA KAYAKING CSU
Hours: 9 total lec hours, 27 total lab hours
Student will continue to develop their sea kayak touring skills by adding expedition techniques. A multi-day
expedition will expose participants to the equipment and methods used to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
Skills include advanced rescue techniques, navigation, proper campsite selection, group travel techniques,
and boat/equipment care and maintenance. Opportunities to work on Eskimo roll. Discussion of tides,
currents, and other ocean elements will be included. Repeatable.
ORL 150 BEGINNING 1 UNIT
WHITE WATER RAFTING CSU, UC
Hours: 9 total lec hours, 27 total lab hours
An introductory course designed for students interested in learning basic competencies related to safe
travel in a white Water raft. Content includes an introduction to the following skills and techniques: paddling,
clothing and equipment, self-rescue, commands for navigation, basic safety, and logistics. Repeatable.
ORL 152 WHITE WATER 2 UNITS
RAFT GUIDING CSU, UC
Hours: 18 total lec hours, 54 total lab hours
White Water raft guiding is both a science and an art. Students in this class will learn how to logistically
organize their own rafting trips. Students will be prepared for entry-lev el work as commercial guides.
Content includes group organization, guide commands, giving a safety talk, safety and rescue, fundamental
hydrology, and raft guiding techniques. Ninety percent of class time is spent on the river. Students must be
prepared for participation in all types of weather on a variety of white Water rivers. Repeatable.
