ECE 082 CHILD HEALTH .5 UNIT
Hours: 9 lec, short-term & SAFETY
The student will be able to identify and address health and safety needs of children and adults in early
childhood center-based programs, family child care settings or individual homes. Topics include:
Playground safety, facilities management, sanitation, immunizations, disease prevention and control, food
storage, child abuse and neglect, fire safety, flooding, earthquake safety, emergency preparedness and risk
management plans. Certification available with a grade of “C” or better. Formerly CHDV 082.
ECE 084 CHILDREN’S LITERATURE, 1.5 UNITS
Hours: 3 lec; 9 weeks STORYTELLING, PUPPETRY CURRICULUM
Presents an overview of literature for young children. Focus is on the presentation of activities and
techniques for effective storytelling. Includes incorporating and extending literacy-based activities across
the curriculum. Formerly CHDV 084.
ECE 086 PROJECT APPROACH 1 UNIT
Hours: 18 lec, short-term TO CURRICULUM
Explores the use of an in-depth study of a specific topic of interest to the children as a framework for
curriculum planning. Includes scaffolding, webbing and the three phases of developing a project. Offers
theory and hands on experience with a project. Formerly CHDV 086.
ECE 088 IMPROVING QUALITY 1.5 UNIT
Hours : 1.5 lec IN ECE PROGRAMS
Provides the opportunity for students to work toward improving their professional skills or specific program
components. Includes self-assessment, development of goals, action plan, assessment and documentation
of specific improvements. Repeatable.
ECE 095 SELECTED TOPICS .25-4 UNITS
Hours: 4-68 total hours IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Designed to permit in-depth investigation of topics not covered by regular course offerings. Course content
to be determined by the instructor in relation to community-student interest. Formerly CHDV 095.
ECE 095.1 SELECTED TOPICS: 1 UNIT
Hours: 18 total lec hours; 1 week EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CONFERENCE
Designed to provide students with exposure to a vast number of topics, presenters and resources in Early Childhood
Education. Requires attendance at the annual California Association for the Education of Young Children Conference
(CAEYC). Conference registration fees are the responsibility of the student. Formerly CHDV 095.1. Repeatable.
ECE 120 EMERGING 1.5 UNITS
Hours: 27 lec, short-term LITERACY–SERIES I CSU
Research-based principles and practices for providing children, birth through age five, a strong foundation
in early reading and writing within a developmentally appropriate approach. Interactive distance learning
course. Formerly CHDV 120.
ECE 122 EMERGING 1.5 UNITS
Hours: 27 lec, short-term LITERACY – SERIES 2 CSU
Research-based principles and practices for providing children, birth through age five, a strong foundation
in early reading and writing within a developmentally appropriate approach. Includes scaffolded instruction,
motivation, goal setting, vocabulary development, print awareness, infusing writing across the curriculum,
phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle. Adaptations for individual and cultural differences, special
needs and second language learners. May be taken separately or as part of a three course series. Series 1 is
not a prerequisite to Series 2. Series 2 is not a prerequisite to Series 3. Formerly CHDV 122.
ECE 124 EMERGING 1.5 UNITS
Hours: 27 lec, short-term LITERACY – SERIES 3 CSU
Research-based principles and practices for providing children, birth through age five, a strong foundation in
early reading and writing within a developmentally appropriate approach. Includes infusing and balancing
literacy across the curriculum, systematic assessment, selection of books and computer software, approaches for
teaching English to second language learners, learning the code of the home language. May be taken separately
or as part of a three course series. Series 1 or 2 are not prerequisites to Series 3. Formerly CHDV 124.
