First I headed down to Central Station and was very impressed with the
effi ciency of the marshalling on the rank and the smart attire of all the
drivers. With no prior appointment I was amazed at how quickly I located
our fi rst driver Alan Mehan and within 2 minutes he had our number 2
driver John (Curley) Thorpe alongside the Cab and ready for a photo.
I have to hand it to these lads. They have been very quick to spot the
opportunity in their local market for the independent driver to create more
business for themselves by offering the facility of taking card payments
from the taxi. Not only did they see the benefi ts but they were not willing
to backdown when their licensing offi ce misunderstood that the payment
processing % was an addition to the fare rate. They persisted and won
the day with word from the licensing offi ce that all is well and to carry on
offering the service.

In his fi rst weekend John had picked up plenty of work from customers
who were delighted to hear that they could pay by card and that wasnʼt
just from the obvious business travellers and foreign tourists. John
reported that the girls on a night out were more than happy to use their
cards rather than detour to a cash machine
