Beach Prep at The Zone

his year, instead of the usual functional beach prep consisting of a homemade

pedicure and a quick salon spray tan, I chose to ‘be kind to thee’ and start my
holiday with a visit to The Zone on Colinton Road. - & $ + & #
The Zone is a small, independent set-up but it’s far from amateur and designed to
rival the city’s top spas and salons, with private treatment rooms and an O.P.I. nail bar.

It’s run by fully-trained professionals, mostly in their twenties, with an enthusiasm for
) * # ( $ #
what they do. No mater how ‘practical’ the treatment, the aim here is clearly to create
the most pleasant salon experience for customers as possible.
I’m based in Leith, so The Zone may not be the most conveniently located salon for
me, but I was there within a half hour’s drive through Holyrood Park and over the
Grange. And that was in rush hour. Also in its favour, there’s on street parking so no
fear of over-running and returning to your car after a Blue Meanie. On weekdays, it’s
open until 9pm - perfect, if work and life dictate all kinds of hours and hair and beauty
appointments are otherwise crammed into a Saturday morning.
The treatment: Fake Bake Lotion tan and O.P.I. file and polish
I lay on the treatment bed and let pure relaxation wash over me as therapist Izzy
prepped my skin by exfoliating from head to toe with Fake Bake body polish. A quick
shower and dry off before the tanning lotion was applied. During tan drying time, my
toe nails were filed and painted a pretty shade of coral.
The verdict: I’ve done professional spray tans on many occasions with varying
degrees of success. This is a whole new experience. The next day I was streak free
and naturally bronzed, and stayed that way for seven days. As for my toes, they’re still
looking good two weeks on, and temporarily, are very happy to slip into something
more revealing than winter boots.
