MUSIC
That’s not to say she doesn’t realise that a certain responsibility
comes along with her newfound fame.
“I’m a goofball, but I’m a professional goofball,” she says. “I
understand the responsibility I have and the opportunity I have,
that so many people want these days. People are expecting me
to continually impress them and I will because I’m in constant
competition with myself.”
The controversy around Perry is more intense because of her
religious upbringing. Raised as a born again Christian, Perry
(real name Hudson) attended Christian schools and camps and
listened only to gospel music initially. At the age of sixteen she
even recorded a Christian rock album.
When that didn’t take off, she went on a musical journey of
discovery, working on her craft for eight years to get to the
point where her debut album as Katy Perry, One of the Boys,
has become one of the biggest sellers in years. And as for that
famous single that started it all, it raises one obvious question,
does she kiss girls?
“I like to kiss boys,” she says. “But there’s no doubt in my mind
if Angelina Jolie or Gisele Bündchen came calling, I’d pucker up.
Who wouldn’t?”
