he kissed a girl and she liked it, apparently. OK, on
one level, pop princess Katy Perry’s worldwide
smash hit I Kissed A Girl was a cleverly
marketed and well-executed piece of titillation for
the masses, but dismissing her as a media-baiting
airhead would be way off the mark.
The 24-year-old Californian singer songwriter is
the freshest thing to happen to pop music in a long
time, combining intelligence and humour with
a unique sense of style and, most importantly,
wonderfully catchy singalong anthems.
“It’s a catchy little number, if I say so myself,”
Perry laughs about her most famous song. “I
wanted to make it tongue-in-cheek. Maybe that’s
why it had a worldwide wave, that every modern
girl’s unspoken is spoken. Everyone gets the gist of the
joke, I think.”
They certainly do if sales are anything to go by. The
single managed to top the charts in 24 countries
and has notched up a remarkable 13 platinum
discs worldwide.
That success launched Perry into the global
celebrity stratosphere and she has remained
tabloid fodder ever since. In the face of all the
furore about her song, she’s stayed remarkably
good natured, fielding all sorts of ridiculous
interrogations about the song’s intentions and
apparent controversies.
“I think the biggest ingredient in everything is my
sense of humour,” she laughs again. “I don’t take myself
or anything else too seriously. At the end of the day, the
world is still going to turn.”
