controllers including lots of screens throughout the house. Bringing together
all those specialist installers at the right time required endless monitoring
and much rescheduling.
“A typical example of the complexities of the work is tying up the labour
for the 25 audio zones where speakers need to be fitted and the grilles
painted. It becomes a major problem if this doesn’t come together on
schedule.
“The scenario that everyone knows is when the client sees things coming
together and, quite rightly, decides to make changes. For this reason
we retain a degree of over-specification of control capacity. This also
involves laying extra Cat.5 cabling. We use this for most hardware with the
appropriate conversion termination. It has many advantages, including being
not so easily damaged as HDMI cable.”
Our last question concerned plasma screens which had been installed in
potentially damp surroundings. Apparently these had been protected against
humidity – how was this achieved?
Edwin replied, “They were simply boxed-in with a sealed glass panel in
front. We experienced no condensation problems using this method.”
It was emphasised by Edwin that he firmly believes in proper management
and the importance of empathising with the client. The highest priority,
however, will always be service – making sure that things work properly and
stay working. Apart from these practical aspects he believes
it’s essential that the customer has a ‘wow’ factor too.
Currently, he is working on a demonstration building for
potential clients to see and become inspired by a whole
range of products presenting them with future possibilities.
Edwin also feels that it’s important to be in touch with
everything associated with prestige homes. This even
includes a butler academy – an excellent way of staying
close to existing and potential clients.
