distance from the horses – you would
not want to put a rope on one of these
bulls, especially if you and your horse
are on the other end! Garrochas are
also used to test the young bulls in the
field – two garrochistas (vaqueros with
garrochas) ride on either side of a gal-
loping bull and, with careful timing,
one of the riders will use the garrocha
to push and unbalance the bull. If the
young bull leaps immediately to its
feet, enraged, then that bull is consid-
ered worthy of the stockman’s herd. If
the bull slowly rises to its feet and
calmly goes about its business, that
bull will be deemed unworthy to sire
offspring and will be removed from the
herd.
In the arena, the garrocha is used
to perform a mesmerizing display of
superb skill and horsemanship. The
horse and rider perform intricate
moves including multiple, spinning
canter pirouettes beneath the garrocha,
as the rider holds the garrocha just high
enough to pass under, while he keeps
its end, unmoving, in the arena’s sand.
At its finest, la garrocha looks like an
intricate, high-level ballet between
horse and rider.
Doma Trabajo is somewhat similar
to “Trail” classes – except that it’s
timed and performed at the canter and
gallop, and includes actual arched
