a174 dessert on the a la carte menu, one swiftly appeared on our table.
Despite Mrs H muttering that I would get fat, I tucked in and have
to report that it was the best dessert I’ve tasted in years.
After coffee, brandy and even some petit fours, we took a quick
turn around the moonlit grounds to help work off that extra dessert.
And when Mrs H made clear that a nightcap was not in the offing,
we headed for bed.
We woke refreshed after a solid night’s sleep and, after dressing,
headed down to the restaurant for breakfast. With the morning
sun streaming in through those French windows, the room was
transformed from a cosy evening retreat to a bright airy space.
I was tempted by the traditional porridge with whisky and brown
sugar glaze. But Mrs H does not approve of alcohol before lunch,
so instead I opted for a full English, complete with free-range
bacon and eggs.
Before leaving, we had the chance to chat to the very gracious
Laura once again. I have to say that she is one of the main reasons
Fishmore Hall is such a pleasant place to stay. She clearly loves
running the hotel and is passionate for her guests to enjoy a
pleasant visit.
This is also reflected in the exceptional service and attentiveness
of her staff as well as in her eye for detail: there is no country hotel
Before
chintz here, just the well-preserved character of the original house.
As we climbed into the old jalopy, Mrs H had a strange look on
her face that I suddenly realised was a smile. She now knew exactly
how she would decorate her studio. Fishmore Hall’s transformation
and After
and Laura’s exquisite taste had given her lots of ideas.
She then fixed me with a level gaze and added: “There are plenty
of interior design shops on the way home – via a few detours. And
fortunately, I picked up the credit cards you so carelessly left in
your sock drawer.”
See what I mean about ideas.
