OGCA Construction Symposium attracts more than 500
Contractors, professionals discuss issues
of concern as recession takes its toll
STAFF WRITER – The OCR Construction Report Special Feature
The sixth annual Ontario General Contractors Associa-
tion (OGCA) Construction Symposium at the Blue Moun-
tain Resort in Collingwood attracted more than 500
participants, representing general contractors, suppliers and
allied industry professionals. From Thursday evening to
Saturday morning (April 23 to 25), OGCA members and
guests learned how to conduct their business more effec-
tively and cope with the recession’s challenges.
Speakers at several sessions provided recession-coping
advice, even as the recession affected attendance, which
declined for the first time in the Symposium’s history.
However, reflecting the value of participating and reaching
general contractors, sponsorships reached a record 59 or-
ganizations, representing a variety of professional, supply
and trade services for the construction industry.
The Construction News and Report Group of Compa-
nies was one of two Platinum sponsors. The CNRGP pub-
lishes Ontario Construction Report, The Ottawa
Construction News, GTA Construction Report and North-
ern Ontario Construction News.
In this special Construction Symposium follow-up re-
port, see our coverage of the association’s increasing con-
cern about unfair and onerous tendering practices, and the
perspectives of four construction company leaders at the
annual President’s Panel. You will also find a photo gallery
showcasing symposium participants.
Next month, we’ll delve into some other important is-
sues discussed at the symposium. What is the state of
bonding, and how are funds likely to be available for con-
tractors as the recession continues? And what can general
contractors and subtrades do to improve their working re-
lationships? If you wish to comment on these topics as we
prepare the June edition, please call Mark Buckshon at 888-
432-3555 ext 224 or email buckshon@cnrgp.com
