on day one, we decide to climb to the
top of the highest dune. on the way up, my
ten-year old brother tells us he will run all
the way to the top, which he does, yelling
exuberant words of encouragement to us
when he reaches the peak. my dad is carry-
ing my 38 pound, two-year old brother on
his back. my mom and 15-year old sister
are half carrying, half supporting my three-
year old brother up the hill. i am looking
down at them from up higher on the dune
with my eight-year old sister. our bare feet
sink into the parched sand. it seems like for
every one step we take we slide down two
