Foundation
Many Rotarians, particularly those who always insist that they
“know nothing” about The Rotary Foundation, might be tempted to
ignore the Annual Report, in the belief that this will be nothing but a
boring, dry set of accounts and statistics. Wrong! The Annual
Report for 2007-8 is a glossy, colourful and informative publication,
nearly equal to Chiltern Chronicle, but not quite!
The biggest news is confirmation that The Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation has contributed US $100 million to help Rotary finally
eradicate polio, once and for all.
There is also news of Humanitarian Grants and other donations
which help to fund clean water systems in many parts of the world,
improve the education and prospects for thousands of under privi-
leged children, support universities, provide doctors and medical
treatment and fund World Peace Fellowships, Ambassadorial
Scholarships and Group Study Exchanges.
Total programme spending for 2007-08 was $227.5 million, which
included $128.8 million of PolioPlus Programme Awards and opera-
tions.
Read all about it in the Annual Report. I am sure that you will be
impressed by the successes of Rotary’s own charity.

The Bach Choir gave a concert on the 16th. I was not present.
There are some sacrifices that should not be demanded twice
from any man and one of them is listening to Brahms’ Requiem.
