Youth Opportunities
I have two major events to regale you with that have been organised
since my last report to the Club. The first of these was our Young Singers
Competition which took place on the 16th February 2009 at St Luke’s
Church in Leagrave High Street, Luton. Thirteen talented singers aged
between 13 and 17 years of age sang their hearts out with a number of
songs and arrangements which delighted a packed audience in the
church. As in previous years the event was fully supported by the Music
Service of Luton Borough Council and in particular Kerry Watson, who
was instrumental in bringing together a fine selection of young singers for
our enjoyment.
We have been running this competition for some years now and the
general view was that this was the best so far. The outright winner was
Joe Robinson from Luton Sixth Form College with the two second
placed equal contestants being Zola Joseph and Emma Wheeler,
respectively. Awards to these three young people were presented by
President Geoff.
It is my committee’s intention to continue with this competition with one
or two minor alterations proposed. Once again the Club is indebted to
Stephen Purvis for the use of his church and its facilities which offers an
ideal setting for the competition.
My grateful thanks go to John Kingham for his tireless work in finalising
the overall arrangements and to Barrie Blewitt for the provision of the
food on the night. May I also thank Stephen and Janet Purvis for their
help after the function was over in clearing up and re-instating the church
fittings and appointments. A few more Rotarians would not have gone
amiss at this time and I shall be pressing for additional volunteers to stay
behind and assist with the clearing up in future. You have been warned!!
The second event took place on Friday the 6th March 2009. This was the
Technology Tournament, held at Stopsley Baptist Church. Once again
Luton Chiltern was heavily involved in this project and it proved to be an
enthralling day. The various teams were set a more difficult task than last
year but the majority acquitted themselves well and it was good to see
