young gunner. The injury left the French without a
commander for some considerable time – a critical
blow to command and control.
We were also able to visit the small museum of
the Battle of Salamanca, opened especially for us by
the curator, who gave us a guided tour. The centre piece of the museum was an impressive model
which depicted the battle in considerable detail. Following the tour of the battlefield itself, we returned
to Salamanca to discuss the points raised throughout the day and conclude proceedings with a quiz.
Winners were awarded musket balls recovered from the battlefield. A number of these articles kindly
donated by Stephen Jones are now displayed at RHQ in Warrington.
The Regiment would certainly commend Salamanca as an excellent site for a battlefield study. The bat-
tle is an excellent example of the importance of the ground, a lesson in command and control and timely
decision making, and an undeveloped battlefield offers an excellent site for a study, discussion of TEWT.
We would be happy to provide copies of the PXR to any unit looking to undertake a similar exercise.
