A helping hand
feature
There are many specialist agencies and services out there willing
to help artists throughout the sometimes complicated world of
licensing. Here are two shining examples.
Artisan Licensing Ltd
Artisan Licensing Ltd was founded in January 2009, and is a specialist agency dedicated
to design-led intellectual property. MD Siobhan Williamson previously spent over 10
years working for leading companies Warner Bros., BBC and Dorling Kindersley in various
licensing roles. Artisan off ers a strategic service for individual artists, designers, studios
and institutions, by connecting brands to manufacturers and retailers of high-quality
consumer products. Artisan aims to bring the best in art and design to a wide audience,
and is passionate about sharing high quality, quirky and original design; from graffi ti-
inspired urban graphics to more traditional pattern-based work and fi ne art.
Artisan is currently working with Bionyc Industries Group to represent their brands
Canvas Nation and Bionyc Industries, as well as Australian fi ne artists and other designers
currently in discussion. Siobhan Williamson, MD of Artisan commented, “The need for
strong, distinctive brands and unique designs has never been greater, with manufacturers
and retailers demanding product that edges out their competitors. Further, I believe that
consumers are less interested in frivolous, seasonal spending. These factors, combined
with the huge trend for eclectic patterning plus a greater focus on brand development,
means that this is the best possible time to start a business in the art and design sector.”
Canvas Nation is an exciting collaboration with illustrative artists from the UK and
Europe and off ers a unique showcase for design talent. “I’m equally excited about the
work we’re doing with the Bionyc Industries brand, updating it with a fashion edge for
the boys market; making it on-trend and irresistible!” said Bru Capozzi, licensing director
for Bionyc Industries Group. He continued: “We decided to appoint a specialist agent to
boost our profi le and give us the edge in this market. We want to make street-inspired
urban graphics accessible to a wide market, while maintaining the originality that makes
them appealing.”

Simply Licensed
Simply Licensed is a website that allows
artists and manufacturers to fi nd each other.
Launched at the Licensing Show in New
York in June 2006, it continues to experience
signifi cant growth in traffi c and members,
and has created the fi rst and only on-line
licensing community. With well over 100
artist members so far (and more being added weekly) and unique visits to the site now nearing 10,000 per month, Simply Licensed off ers an easy way
for licensees to fi nd new and exciting art and character properties, and a cost-eff ective way for property owners to showcase their fi ne art, design,
brands and characters.
Most importantly, Simply Licensed allows artists to maintain control – control of their business and control of the content on their pages. It does
not get involved in any deals sourced through the site, nor does it collect a percentage of any such deals, and it provides an easy way to build and
customize your pages. All art is automatically watermarked ‘protected’ on upload using the proprietary software, and all deals are done directly with
the artist or their agent.
Use of the site is free. Artists and property owners may upload up to 50 of their images and showcase up to 10 at any one time, along with their
biographical, licensing, business and contact information. Art can be removed and uploaded at will. Simply Licensing provides members access to
valuable resources such as special deals with a company that creates three-dimensional mock-ups, an opportunity to display at the Licensing Show,
classifi ed advertisements, a message board, free press releases and royalty tracking through a strategic partnership.
Because it’s easy to use and free, Simply Licensed has rapidly become the premiere site for artists and licensees to fi nd each other – simply. For more
