Putting together a magazine about art is quite nerve-wracking.
Suddenly my ususal focus – the words! – changed, and I had to rethink
my approach. By its very nature, this publication is all about art –
Jacqui Parr
the art which you have made your business, whether as an artist, a
photographer, an agency or a licensee. We wanted to allow the images
within Art Buyer to speak for themselves, to grab your attention and
imagination as much as possible. Hopefully we’ll have achieved that
– but old habits die hard, so we’ve combined the strong art-led style
with some fantastic articles and features, each one different, and each
one illustrating the variety and eclectic nature of this fascinating
industry.
By far the largest feature in this issue is our Surtex preview.
Taking place between the 17 and 19 of May at New York City’s Jacob
K. Javits Convention Centre, the leading art licensing show in the
world is an unimissable event. Kay Hall, of K Hall Arts Management
put it perfectly, saying: “We come to Surtex because this is the only

show that brings together people from all over the world with a

common goal; to license images to and wow the eyes of the world
with something new and unique. It’s like the old saying ‘opportunity

knocks’ but you have to be able to open the door to let it in. I see
john@lemapublishing.co.uk
Surtex as that door.”
I’ll be attending this year’s show, and I’m really looking forward

to it. Not because it’s my first time in New York (although, yes,
jacqui@lemapublishing.co.uk
admittedly, that helps!), but because working on Art Buyer has given
me a small insight into the art licensing world and I can’t wait to find

out more. I have picked up just enough information to know I have

only scratched the surface! It’s been a fascinating journey so far – I
have spoken to artists, art libraries and licensing agencies and the

one common thread throughout is the passion each and every one of

you demonstrates for your work. Art is extremely subjective, and as
such the licensing community is expansive and wide-ranging – the

phrase ‘something for everyone’ has rarely been so appropriate. I’ve

discovered a new favourite artist – Louis Wain, who painted the two
images below. I think they are fantastic – colourful, vibrant and funny.
Our thanks to the contributors: Regina
But if they’re not quite what you are looking for, then there is plenty

of other imagery inside to choose from...

On that note, I hope you enjoy this issue of Art Buyer. We’ve got
some great contributors and have spoken to some of the leading lights
