Evans of Jesmond is leading
the way in groundbreaking
technology with 3D Ocular
Coherence Tomography
Question: what’s the news ?
Answer: Medical Diagnostic Equipment in the high
street. The first in the North East of England. Using
state of the art 3D Ocular Coherence Tomography
(OCT)
We now have the ability to take both a 3D cross
sectional scan and a digital photograph of the back
of your eye in one sitting. This allows us to instantly
detect a number of common conditions. What’s more,
all of the information is stored on computer and can
be monitored for changes to your retina with every
scan you take.
The most common is Age Related Macular
Degeneration (AMD). Macular degeneration causes
the gradual breakdown of the macular (the central
portion of the eye). OCT can not only identify this
condition and its type (there are two types, Wet and
Dry) but also monitor its progress. Unfortunately the
risk of developing macular degeneration increases
with age and is the most common causes of vision loss
in individuals over the age of fifty.
Another common condition is Vitreous
Detachment. The jelly that makes up over half the
eye can change shape and become less firm and can
move away from the back of the eye towards the
centre, in some cases parts do not detach and cause
pulling on the retinal surface. The danger of a vitreous
detachment is that there is no pain and your eyesight
will seem unchanged but the back of your eye may be
being damaged. This condition increases with age but
is also common in younger people involved in contact
sports such as boxing, rugby and football.
The following conditions are readily detectable by
OCT scans:
Central Serous Retinopathy
Epiretinal Membrane
Diabetic Macular Odema
Foveal Heamorrhage
Macular Drusen
Macular Hole
Papillodema
Retinal Arterial Occlusion
Retinal Vein Occlusion
A scan costs ninety nine pounds.
