news
There are plenty of positive, good news snippets around for the UK
vending industry this month. Firstly, the really good news is that the last
few remaining stands at AVEX are being snapped up rapidly. In the last
couple of weeks several new exhibitors have confi rmed they will be
there - many of them for the fi rst time - including California Raisins,
Kettle Chips, Caffè Society, Qualitasse, Cover, Traffi cmaster and Aquatik
Distribution. Looking at the business profi les of some of the exhibitors
and the information which is now starting to come through for our
editorial previews, I think we are in for a different kind of AVEX, refl ecting

Janette has also forwarded to me a cutting from another magazine,

which talks about how wasteful the average person is when making

This should be music to the ears of the average company whilst

a report from Siemens Financial Services published during March
has highlighted that for many businesses, continuing to invest in
energy-saving technology/equipment is a lower priority than cost.
So to hear that there are simple steps that can be taken to both
reduce energy consumption and water usage whilst saving money
has to be a ‘win win’ situation.
The article goes on to list some steps to a more energy-effi cient
tea break recommended by sustainable business expert, Envirowise,
which include appointing a tea monitor to oversee the effi ciency
of the tea making process. Surely there is a much simpler solution
- ie, install a machine that will brew and dispense drinks on demand
- yes, a vending machine!
Finally, last month I mentioned the KitKat® ‘human vending
machine’ as seen on Victoria Rail Station. This month vending again
features in an unusual application with another big brand as Coca-
Cola launches its new Happiness Factory ad, which features the
now well-known Happiness Factory characters in the fantastical
world inside a Coca-Cola vending machine. Coca-Cola’s PR on

the release of the advert stated, “The narrative centres around the

premise that inside the unassuming exterior of every ‘Coke’ vending
machine is a gateway to the Happiness Factory - a mystical land
where deliciously imaginative creatures work to ensure the magic
of ‘Coca-Cola’ is in every bottle.”
When’s my next holiday? I want to go there, it looks like great fun!
