WEST MIDLANDS’
DESERT STORM
The 2009 All Breeds All Britain Calf Show was
dominated by the West Midlands Club, with
Sahara Holsteins to the fore. Simon Gee reports
excellent, as he made his mind up quickly and
consistently, taking the time to speak to every
competitor.
The Show itself proved to be a triumph for
the West Midlands Club as they took six of
the ten classes contested over the two days,
including an unprecedented five of the six
calf classes with a superb team of calves from
Sahara Holsteins. The Champion calf was the
Lucy Jones-led Ridgefield Fortune Ash Angel
from Sahara, a To-Mar D-Fortune grand
daughter of Tri Day Ashlyn EX96, out of the
EX92 Stormatic daughter EO Siemers Ashlyns
Angel. Picking her out of his Championship
line up, judge Doner described her as
epitomising breed character with overall
angularity and outstanding bone quality.
Standing as Reserve, and a fitting match to
the Champion in terms of depth in the fore
and rear rib, was Angel’s stable mate Sahara
Damion Tessie in the capable hands of Tadgh
Bourke, with Ridgefield Show Rosie and Louise
Thomas named as Honourable Mention.
The date change to February didn’t alter the
format of the Show, and all the entries had to
qualify to represent their HYB club. Those not
involved sometimes forget that the Show is a
Club, rather than an open, competition and is
even more keenly contested for it.
