Hollywoodmusicalsinspiteofthemajorandsometimesinnovativecontributionthey
madetodanceinfilm.EveryoneknowsthenameBusbyBerkeley;fewerpeoplewould
recognisethenamesDaveGouldandHermesPanwhodidthechoreographyfor
TheGayDivorceewhichsawthebeginningofthewonderfulAstaire/Rogersdancing
partnership.Thistalk,illustratedwithclipsfromthedancefilmsofthe30s,40sand
50s,willthrowsomelightonthesechoreographersandatthesametimeaffordthe
opportunitytoenjoyseeingsomeofthegreatestdancetalentseverrecordedonfilm.

thisversatileonscreendanceformthroughitscinematicevolutionoveraspanofover

itwonfirstprizeataninternationalcompetitionfornewchoreographyinParis.The
piecewasapowerfulanti-warstatement,expressedthroughacompellingdance
narrative.AfterfleeingNaziGermany,JoossestablishedaschoolatDartingtonHallin
DevonanditwasherethatSheilaHargreavesattendedasummerschoolin1948,
receivingascholarshiptostudywithJooss'teacherandfriendRudolfvonLabanthe

followingyear.SheilaHargreaveshasworkedextensivelyincreativedanceand
movementineducationatalllevels.Thiswillbeauniqueopportunitytohearabout
howherexperiencesduringafascinatingandinfluentialperiodindancehistoryhave
