still mostly unspoiled and pristine, a
place within close proximity of the
ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum and
said to be blessed by the gods.
Nestled among these lush environs
is the sprawling Barceló Maya Beach
Resort. Set against more than a mile
of sparkling Caribbean beach, protect-
ed by a natural coral reef, it manages
to feel like a hideaway, even though
it’s a large resort.
A sweeping nature park envelops
the Barcelo Resort, which is com-
prised of five hotels. Inspired by both
classical and new age Mayan archi-
tecture, all of the hotels are colorfully
decorated, impeccably maintained,
and full of amenities.
Guestrooms feature a private ter-
race or balcony, cozy bathrobes, a
mini bar stocked with free treats, and
satellite TV. My accommodations
were pretty, spacious, and relaxing,
with a bathroom area that was particu-
larly wonderful. The open shower was
so large it could have held three
people.
