ure, the idea of a road trip may seem crazy this summer, with gas

prices ridiculously high and the tight economy making every penny
count whether at the mall or the grocery store.
Yet staying at home and watching cable re-runs sounds dull with a
capital “D”-- right? So why not gather your crew and head for the beach?
For lucky East Coast residents like folks here in the Washington/
Baltimore area, there are plenty of nearby options abound for beach-
goers desiring sand, surf and sun. Many of these destinations are just a
few hours away by car.
Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia all have a variety of beaches that
beckon. And whether you want to swim, go boogie boarding, collect sea
shells, or simply check out all the eye candy in those teeny swimsuits,
there’s sure to be one (or more) that suits your fancy.
Envision blue skies, crashing waves, the cool ocean, warm breezes and
mounds of sand to dig your toes into, not to mention lounging under an
umbrella with your iPOD, a fun read and a cold drink. ... Yeah, it’s time
to hit the beach, baby!

MARYLAND

Ocean City, a Perennial Favorite

Native Marylanders definitely know the drill: Once the
weather turns warm, massive crowds of beach-goers make
their annual trek down to Ocean City-- or as some say in
the local dialect--they head “downy Ocean.”
Renowned for its 10 miles of white sand beaches, dotted
with volleyball nets and umbrellas, this ever-popular vaca-
tion spot in Worcester County is a destination for everyone
– from college students to families. One other reason for its
popularity is Ocean City’s famous boardwalk, a 3-mile-long
promenade by the sea ranked one of the “Best Boardwalks in
America” by the Travel Channel.
Suitable for strolling, bicycle rides or in-line skat-
ing, the boardwalk is lined with hotels, arcades,
specialty shops and eateries with treats galore–
–from caramel popcorn and saltwater taffy, to
Thrasher’s french fries, ice cream and, of
course, Maryland’s world famous crab cakes.
The boardwalk ends at the fishing pier with
amusement rides, including water slides, roller
coasters and a giant Ferris wheel.
The boardwalk is just part of Ocean City’s
appeal. The resort town also takes its water
