ccording to International Graphics, Iconic Art as a genre has

been around for a good 20 years in our industry but despite
entering this part of the market quite recently, just over a year
ago in fact, their range of high quality Marilyn Monroe images
by well-known Austrian artist Gery Luger have rapidly risen to
the top of their best-seller lists and have become essential items
in any gallery’s iconic off ering.
Welcome as this is, Lawrence Walmsley, owner of International Graphics told
Picture Business: “We haven’t changed the focus or direction of the company,
these pictures are beautifully designed pieces of art in their own right, of which
the Marilyn Monroe image is one of just a number of elements within which
combine to help the picture sell on its own merit.”
Th e traditional divide between ‘personalities’ and ‘art’ has become much less
distinct over the years and recent innovations in technology and printing allows
companies such as IG to apply their design skills to a well-known image and
come up with something completely new and innovative, which is what the
market demands these days.
Ian Cairns, export manager for IG added: “Some people say it’s a combination
of glamour and escapism in the pictures which helps us forget the present and
drives sales forward in times like these but I disagree. I think a well-designed,
high quality print with fashionable colour elements within it will sell well
whatever the prevailing economic conditions.”
