Figurative works!
Born in the area of the ‘Potteries’ some 36
years ago, Neil Welch left school with ‘A’
Grades in art and took on an apprenticeship as
a Stage Set and Props designer with a theatre
local to him. However, after seeing some of
his sculptural work he was approached by
Wedgwood’s to work with them in-house
learning all aspects of form and fi gurative
sculpture and animal anatomy. He was to stay
with Wedgwood for a period of seven years.
More recently, he has become a freelance
sculptor and designer in his own right, which
has enabled him to ‘liberate his creativity’.
He told Picture Business: “I have a natural
synergy with the naked body and the beautiful
lines of the human form allow me to combine
my work with that of a strong sense of design.”
He continued: “I work using metal armatures
building the clay onto it as I go.”
He concluded: “I feel my artwork is suitable
for commercial publishing because I have
received such great appreciation from the
public at large as well as successfully selling a
number of pieces myself.”

Deborah Benbrook is a Leeds-based, self-taught photographic artist. After working for a bank for some 16 years,
she was made redundant in the November of 2005. She treated such an act as an opportunity, rather than a
disaster and turned her one time hobby into a business. She told Picture Business: “I purchased a professional
SLR camera and taught myself how to use it. As I shoot digitally, I also had to teach myself Photoshop. To date, I
have been selling my work to the public through my website and at local farmers’ markets and craft fairs.”
In February 2007 Deborah gained her Licentiateship qualifi cation with the British Professional Photography
Association [BPPA]. The BPPA hold monthly competitions and since joining, it is understood, she has received 17
awards for her work.
Also during 2007, ‘Travel Photographer of the Year’ invited her to join their showcase gallery of some of the
very best travel photographers.
Not one to sit on past successes, in 2008 she gained her Licentiateship with the British Institute of Professional
Photographers, [BIPP] and later that year delivered a talk to the Yorkshire membership of BIPP on her journey
into photography, as well as writing an article for [the] Digital Camera magazine. In addition, F2, a professional
photographer’s magazine interviewed her and ran an extended article on her story.
Describing the inspiration behind her work,
Deborah told Picture Business: “The inspiration
for my work is the world we live in. If I see
something that grabs me, I’ll take a picture of
it.”
There can be little doubt that her work is
suitable for commercial publishing because she
has already had successes in selling her work
to consumers, which in turn proves the saleable
Life Saver
quality of her work.
