paint because of their vibrant colour and character, the cockerels in particular; and more
recently the hares, which come with such magic and mythology attached, and are so
elegant and mysterious. Painting bugs and butterfl ies was inspired by our local natural
history museum, the Booth in Brighton, which has drawers full of wonderful specimens;
the more you look, the more astonishing are the subtle patterns and colours.

According to DeMontfort, animals in art may appear in a variety of guises, from serious
wildlife representations to light-hearted naïve images. Two highlights of their Spring
Collection are stunning animal portraits from very diff erent artists. ‘Windswept Lion’
is a superb new wildlife piece from one of the UK’s most collectable modern masters,
Rolf Harris CBE. Th is intimate image captures the power and latent energy of a majestic
animal with Harris’s trademark combination of technical brilliance and aff ectionate
warmth. In contrast the more formal but no less impactful ‘Amethyst’ [pictured (10)]
from Lesley Th iel is a mesmerising representation of the grace and power of a magnifi cent
animal. On the originals front, Carol Gillan continues to delight with her huge aff ection
for the animal kingdom. Her bold, distinctive style arises from an unerring sense of
colour and a singular talent for observation, and her uplifting mages demonstrate her rare
