henNancy Brinker founded Susan G. Komen for the
Cure in 1982, an early breast cancer diagnosis had a
five-year survival rate of 74 percent.
Today,with earlier detection and more effective
treatments, the five-year survival r ate is 98 percent.W
Moreover,nearly 75 percent of women over the age of
40 now receive regular mammograms —compared to just 30 percent
in 1982.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure has h elped make the difference by
investing more than $1.2 billion in research and community outreach.
“Nearly every major advance in the d iagnosis and treatment of
breast cancer has received Komen dollars at some point,” said Dana
Curish, executive director for the S usan G. Komen for the Cure –
Indianapolis Affiliate.
Yetresearchers still don’tknow what causes breast cancer or
how to prevent it. Susan G. Komen for the Cure estimates that the
breast cancer diagnosis rate in the U.S. is 1-in-8 women. Without a
cure, more than amillion American w omen and 10 million women
worldwide could die from the disease over the next 25 years.
