Artist
A historic collection of expressive charcoal drawings and
evocative paintings by local artist Kate Lynch is currently
showing at the Brewhouse Theatre’s Gallery in Taunton
Theexhibition,entitledSheep:fromLambtoLoom, Thepicturesandatmosphericsoundswilltake
takesusonafascinatingandrare‘behindthe theaudienceonamulti-sensoryjourneyintothe
scenes’journeyandformsacaptivatingpicture pastures,farms,parloursandworkshops.This
ofrurallife,capturingasitdoesoneoftheoldest universallyappealingprojectcommemoratesthe
relationshipsbetweenfarmerandanimal.Itisthe WestCountry’slivingsheepfarmingheritage,telling
resultofthreeyears’fieldworkbyKatewhohas thestoryinsequence,fromtheshepherdsraddling
travelledtheWestCountry,fromtheMendipsto rams,lambingandshearing,tothemarketauctions,
Exmoor,andfromtheSomersetLevelstothesea, thenontothesheepdogtrainers,thebutchersthe
documentingtheseasonalworkofshepherds, tanneryandthecheesemakers.Asthenarrative
shearers,marketauctioneers,woolgraders,weavers, unfoldswegoontothewoolgradingdepot,the
tannersandotherartisans.IntheGalleryKate’s scouringandspinningmill,thecarpetweaving
paintingsanddrawingsareaccompaniedbya factory,andfinallyintothestudiosandlivingrooms
soundpiecedesignedbyAlastairGoolden,whohas ofthehand-spinner,peg-loomweaver,feltmakerand
recordedtheambientnoiseofthevariousactivities knitter.Eachtellstheiruniquestoryalongtheway.
