Records – his label for 1992’s self-titled debut, and 1994’s Somewhat Slightly
Dazed, supported with a tour that included Maggie’s Dream band members
and the usual assortment of “universities, festivals, and sweaty crowds.” With
four subsequent records, some Billboard chart action, numerous television
appearances, and tours with artists such as Sting, Edwin McCain, Stevie Nicks,
and the Bacon Brothers, Gaines has had ample opportunity to bask in the
spotlight. But he chooses instead to draw his passion and energy from the same
well he always has.
“Those things can go completely away,” Gaines said, “and we’re going to be what
we’ve always been. When the show starts it’s going to be me and my guitar.”
And Gaines will take both of those on the road this spring when embarks on an
East Coast tour of venues from Massachusetts to Georgia. “The smaller venue
shows allow you to get to the depths of reality, truthfulness, and intimacy. You
don’t feel pushed to be as dramatic.”
True to form, Gaines will let his music tell the story.
