Boxers new and old
face their challenges

The Little Girl is back in the ring and this time with a
little girl of her own to watch from the sidelines.
At the Jimmy Barry Memorial Boxing Card held March

Coach and mentor Trevor Kellington who held Kukura’s
15-month-old daughter up to the rings to see the judge
raise Kukura’s hand as the decided winner, says it was
“great to see her back in the ring.”
“Brandi went away to College and had a baby. There’s
been a lot of changes in her life lately, but she’s back and 2009
she’s just as tough as ever.”
Equally impressed by her performance was a high
performance provincial coach from Edmonton, who
prepares fighters for national competitions.
“He was really impressed with her form and her
style,” says Kellington. “We just need to work on her

go quite a ways with this.”
With a total of eight local fighters working the rings that

hometown crowd,” says Kellington. “Competing is

something that takes a quite a bit to get used to. No
matter how much they train before hand, once they enter
that ring they’re all alone with no one to count on but
themselves, and you do what you can do.”
“It’s a personal challenge more than anything else,” he
adds.
By far the biggest crowd-pleasing bout of the evening

was the equal in size and talent match up between local
fighter Lance Arthurs and Calgary fighter Matt Elhart,
whose match ramped the crowd up so much they
jumped to their feet and gave both fighters a standing
ovation at the sounding of the last bell. In the end though
it was local boy Arthurs who emerged the winner.
“He really went to the bar,” says Kellington. “He was so
tired by the end of the second round, he was thinking he

“It was quite the thing to see these two tall 6’4” lanky
boys fighting their hearts out.”
While the boxing training season in Acadia Valley
will soon draw down to a close for the summer, the
competitive season is still in full swing with three events
still to come in Calgary, Regina and Eston, Saskatchewan.

“Eston and Calgary are both on April 25th,” says
Kellington. “But we’re still going to try and send fighters
to both somehow. Those clubs supported this card —
now it’s our turn to support them. It’s the way the boxing
world works.”
