I agree. However, I feel the masterpiece of family is in
danger. In our fast-paced, overscheduled society, it’s easy
to say how much we value family. The question is

talking or simply being together is far more powerful

than constant frantic activity. By being fully present in
the moment with our families, we nourish their souls and
ours. Our loved ones sense it when we’re focused on

them and as a result, we connect more closely with one
another and with life.
This week, I ask you to set aside some time in a quiet
space to reflect on how often your family truly connects.
How much time does your family spend separately, even

in your own home (e.g. playing video games, surfing the
net, doing chores alone)?
How much of your time together consists of flying by
each other as you get ready to go somewhere else? How
much of your family time is spent watching movies,

playing video games, or going to events instead of

sharing activities where you’re focused on each other?

How much time is spent connecting face-to-face and
being fully present in the moment?
This exercise isn’t easy to do because we often realize
there’s less true connecting going on than we thought.
Once we’re aware of that, we have the power to change it
(I’ll speak to that in my next column).
I write this because I’m passionate about family. I
believe the heart of success is family. I know the more
time and energy we consciously dedicate to building
loving, supportive, connected families, the greater the
positive change we’ll see in the world.
Amazing families don’t just happen. They take a full
investment of our selves at a much deeper level than just
our words.
