The conservation areas in Angola include national parks and nature reserves
which were established to preserve its rich biodiversity in terms of ecosystems and fauna,
and comprise unique landscapes, rare fauna, and abundant water resources.
The vast size of the country, its inter-tropical geographical location, the altitude
variation and the biome types result in huge animal biodiversity, with the diversity of
mammals and birdlife being one of the richest on the continent, with approximately 275
recorded species of mammals, 900 bird species, 78 amphibians and 227 reptiles.
From a floral diversity point of view, there are more than 5.000 species of plants
and a wide variety of ecosystems, with forest being dominant in the northern part of the
country and savannah, gallery forest as well as the Namibe desert in the south of Angola.
The thirteen conservation areas cover approximately 6,6% of the national territory
(82.272 km2) containing a variety of ecosystems, where two extremes are highlighted,
namely the desert in the south with species such as the oryx and zebra and dense tropical
forest with elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees in the north of Angola.
This richness is underlined by the presence of the giant sable antelope in the
Cangandala National Park and Welwitschia mirabilis in the Iona National Park, both
symbols of Angolan identity.
Angola has wide biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems (of continental, marine and
coastal waters); it is one of the most important marine biodiversity centres and one of the
most productive fishery areas. Its coastline, with a length of 1,650 km, is of paramount
importance for the ecological processes and for its fauna and flora.
The Government of Angola is implementing the recommendations made in
the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan which includes an increase in the
conservation areas up to 15% of Angolan territory, in order to protect important ecosystems
and biodiversity species.
On the other hand, and as a way to ensure sustainable management of the
biodiversity, a number of actions designed to preserve our natural heritage are being
implemented, with emphasis on the rehabilitation of the infrastructures of the national
parks (Cangandala, Quiçama, Bicuar and Iona), the Project on the Conservation of the
Giant Sable as well as initiatives to establish transfrontier conservation areas.
