Tangmang Gravity flow scheme

This village is three hours walk up hill from the nearest
road. It is also a very scattered settlement and so walking
from one side to the other takes hours. There are various
meeting points in the village – one of which is right at
the top of the hill, where people from both sides can
come and meet.
NEWAH has helped the community here install a
gravity flow scheme and there are now taps around the
community. Each house has a latrine and a programme
of hygiene education work has also taken place.

We used to collect our water from the river, which took 30 minutes. Before we had
the tap we used to have stomach ache and diarrhoea but now this is not a problem.
Now I live right next to the tap and it takes me just over one minute to collect water.
I use the extra time in kitchen gardening and keeping the house clean.
We didn’t have a toilet – we just used to go in the open, but now it is much easier.
It was difficult before and we used to be scared of the animals at night – especially
snakes, wild cats, tigers and jackals.
We have learnt to make a drying rack and to keep our utensils clean. We cover our
water pots and also know how to make diarrhoea solution. We have learnt a lot from
our health and hygiene classes. Before we had unhygienic water – now we have
clean water and our children don’t suffer from diseases.
