The Greening of PGD
From commuting to work by bicycle to eating a vegetarian diet, Peter Dunn tries to model a sustainable
lifestyle for employees at P. Graham Dunn. In addition, many of our employees are from a Mennonite or
Amish faith background, which emphasizes living simply and being good stewards of the earth.
Although the green movement became popular over the past ten years with global warming and rising gas
prices, P. Graham Dunn has followed many sustainable practices since back when green was just a color.
Employees are encouraged to turn off lights to reduce electric use. A large portion of our box supply is
pre-used and otherwise discarded, and boxes and other packaging supplies are reused as often as possible.
Newspaper waste is reused as packaging. Cardboard is recycled through Mennonite Central Committee
(MCC), a Mennonite non-profit organization, and any profits go to MCC. All wood waste is chipped and given
to local farmers, along with sawdust, to use as bedding for their animals. Our finishing department uses latex
and water based paints, which are non-toxic to the environment and the workers. The majority of the paper
used is 30% pre-consumer recycled paper.
Our most used resource, wood, meets strict certification standards, including the Composite Panel
Association’s (CPA) Environmentally Preferred Product Standard (EPP), the California Air Resources Board
(CARB Phase 1 ceiling), and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification standards. The multiple density
fiberboard (MDF) used in the large majority of PGD products is 100% pre-consumer recycled wood fiber and
is manufactured by a company that employs state-of-the-art Ecobind technology to meet standards for low
emissions.
In addition to these good business practices, Peter Dunn, along with sons Paul and Thomas and our
landscaping expert Chet Miller, have led annual tree planting ventures in which more than four thousand trees
have been planted on the family farm over the past four years. This is enough trees to offset carbon emissions
for the average American family of four for 10 years. Landscaping plans at the new factory location include
native plants and wildlife habitat landscaping.
