Holocaust Memorial Day
First held in 2001, the date for
Holocaust Memorial Day was chosen as
the anniversary of the liberation of
Auschwitz-Birkenau.
As part of the local commemoration of
the day, the Bournemouth Jewish
Representative Council will be staging
an exhibition from the Jewish Museum
called ‘The Last Goodbye: The rescue of
children from Nazi Europe.’
It is the story of the 10,000
unaccompanied children who came to
Britain on the Kindertransport,
highlighting issues relating to prejudice,
racism and indifference. Come and see
this moving exhibition at Bournemouth
Library from 19 January until 2 February.
The theme for National Holocaust
Memorial Day 2009 is ‘Stand Up To
Hatred’. There will also be an event on
Photo: Weiner Library. The exhibition displays photographs of the Kindertransport
the afternoon of 27 January at the
Pavilion starting at 1.30pm. A survivor of the Holocaust, Mala Tribish, will be talking about her experiences. Members of
other minority groups who face discrimination in the 21st century have also been invited to talk about their experiences.
