Working
Hand hygiene where it matters
When you come into hospital you may notice that hand rubs have been removed
from areas that are not supervised – such as the main entrance of the Royal
together to
Bournemouth Hospital when reception is closed.
This has happened following advice from the National Safety Patient Agency (NPSA)
lower
following the misuse of hand gel in other areas of the country. Most incidents have
not caused any harm, but it is still important that we take care where we place
infection
the dispensers.
Working together to control infection
At the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals we are doing a number of
rates
things to control infection. We have:
• An infection control team of microbiologists and infection control nurses
• Housekeeping staff who are employed directly by the hospital and are part of the
ward team
• Rigorous control of antibiotics
• MRSA screening for patients
• Resource staff on each ward who monitor the control of infection and provide an
essential link between the ward and the infection control team
• Training for all new staff and regular training for all ward staff
• Regular briefings to remind staff of good hand hygiene and other essential
information
• Away days to share best practice and new innovations with each other – from safer
wound care to encouraging patients to use hand gel.
Help us to keep infection rates down
Using the alcohol hand rub is the quickest and most effective way to quickly clean
your hands if you are caring for or visiting a friend or relative in hospital.
Where there are cases of diarrhoea or vomiting, hand washing must take place.
Please ask staff to show you how and where you can clean your hands before visiting
friends or relatives. Thank you for your continued support.
