The table tennis player
Shirley enjoys an active social life playing table tennis, bridge and visiting
the cinema. But she is also a voluntary worker, devoting time to being on the
Friends Committee of Tenovus - a local cancer charity. She has been a member for
the last nine years and even asks family and friends to make donations to Tenovus
instead of buying her birthday gifts.
Shirley, who moved to Bournemouth from London 10 years ago, is an ambassador for
volunteering. She said: “I enjoy volunteering as I feel I get more back than I give,
it’s really rewarding.”

The fencer
Brian has been fencing on and off for more than 50 years, competing at all
levels both within the UK and around the world. He is the principal of Espada
Fencing Club, based at the Littledown Centre, where he mentors youngsters, adults
and wheelchair users.
Brian tells us why he loves the sport so much: “There aren’t many physical sports
where you can have a 70-year-old and an eight-year-old competing and having fun
together. Fencing really bridges the age gap, it’s terrific.”
