LAST NIGHT A CDJ
RUINED MY LIFE
Hospital Records are currently ﬁghting to keep
vinyl the premium format in drum & bass. Dan
explains why he is also a strictly wax man.
“I only play vinyl these days. I used to play
exclusively CDs for almost a year, but about 18
months ago I said to myself, ‘look, I just don’t
enjoy this any more’. Once you’ve learnt the
tricks, it’s so simple. On the pitch control of a
CDJ, 0.6% is one BPM at d&b speeds, so if you
play one tune at +2 and you know the next track
you’re cueing up is one BPM faster you play it
at 2.6. As long as you know your six times table,
you’re laughing! This means as long as you’ve
got two decent CDJs, you can’t drop a mix. I
played a four-hour set in Vienna at that time and
eveåry single mix was absolutely perfect. And I
realised at that point that I’d taken a large part
of the enjoyment and challenge I get from DJing
out of it. It became mechanical. So I started
cutting dubplates again. The capacity for human
error is being eliminated in modern music. We all
make tunes on computers, we hit quantize, and
everything is perfect. It shouldn’t be like that with
DJing as well”.
