YOUTH LEAGUE CLAIMS ONLYWIN Canowindra Tigers travelled to Condobolin on Sunday to take on the Condobolin Rams in all three grades. The League Tag girls were down on numbers, playing with only two reserves, but went out strong but couldn’t hold out Condo, going down 28-16. Going into the break at 12 all, Condo came out strong scoring first in the second half but it wasn’t long before Bonny Wythes dashed from dummy half to score beside the posts. Unfortunately Condo snuck out of reach and scored twice in the last five minutes of the game. Tries went to Jess Fisher 2, Bonny Wythes 1, and Millie Cantle converted 2 out of 3 attempts and received Players' Player. The girls played well, stayed positive and never gave up. Canowindra's Youth League team had a good win over Condobolin 28-12. In what was a special day for team favourite Kain Earsman, happy 18th birthday Kain, saw Canowindra take control from the beginning. Kain lead the team onto the field and was awarded game points. Harry Myers had his best game of the season and was rewarded with 3 points and Players' Player. Other points went to Blake Willson and Mick Clyburn. Try scorers were Dylan 2, and Browny, Harry and Kain all crossed once. Matt McLean had a near perfect day only missing once in his five attempts. Although Canowindra’s first grade didn’t let the boisterous crowd get to them, they went down to Rams, with their heads held high, 42 to 22. Sunday’s main game had the Tigers defending from the first whistle with Condo scoring in the first 18 minutes. Canowindra’s Brad Bowman responded not long after, taking them to 12 points. The boys went to the break down 18-12. The second half was initially looking up when Sam O crossed for an equalizer. This was as close as the Tigers would get with Condo staying one try ahead before getting out of reach. In what turned out to be an injury plagued second half had Brad Bowman, Nella, Brock White (controversially spear tackled) and Blocka all leave the field not to return. Some sloppy ball handling and miss judged passes let the boys down in their first loss of the season. Stuart Scott converted 3 out of 4 and was instru- mental in defence, never giving up on the chase. Lachlan Watson was, as ever, reliable in his tackling, Peta Pita strong in attack and Brodie Friend backed up all day. Well done to Mick Clyburn for backing up from the youth to play nearly a full game with first grade and Sam O for receiving players player. The Tiger’s have a function coming up on Friday 27 July at the Canowindra Services Club. The theme is Pyjama Party which means, as the title suggest; you come in your PJs. There will be prizes, games and music, all to kick off at 6.30pm. More details next week but put it on your calendar. Congratulations to Brett Gray, with ticket orange A80, who was the winner of the raffle on the weekend and thank you to everyone who bought a ticket. Thanks again to all our sponsors, supporters, volunteers and the dedicated families of the players, we hope to see you next weekend at Tom Clyburn Oval for our game against the Cargo Blue Heelers. League Tag kicks off at 12:40pm and First Grade 2pm.

New guide can help growers manage blackleg disease. Are you in a high risk situation for blackleg disease in canola, and what practices can you change to reduce or prevent yield loss in canola? Answers to these questions are contained in the new GRDC Blackleg Management Guide Fact Sheet contained in the July/August edition of the GRDC magazine Ground Cover and available at
www.grdc.com.au/GRDC-FS- BlacklegManagementGuide The fact sheet, developed by the GRDC in con- junction with Steve Marcroft of Marcroft Grains Pathology at Horsham, Victoria, outlines steps to help growers manage blackleg including: Determining your farm’s blackleg risk; Determining each paddock’s blackleg severity;
CROP SPOT: CANOLA
Management practices to reduce the risk of blackleg infection;
Blackleg resistance groups. Key Points Monitor your crops to determine yield losses in the current crop. –– Choose a cultivar with adequate blackleg resistance for your region. Never sow your canola crop into last year’s canola stubble. –– Relying only on fungicides to control blackleg poses a high risk of fungicide resistance. –– If your monitoring has identified yield loss and you have grown the same cultivar for three years or more, choose a cultivar from a different resistance group.
