FEDERAL ROUNDS with The Hon John Cobb MP Federal Member for Calare
Carbon Tax introduction: Well, the Carbon Tax is here, and while many prices, like electricity, will rise straight away, the biggest costs will build up as time goes on. Labor has sought to gloss over the introduction of the Carbon Tax by saying the sky hasn’t fallen in so there’s no need to worry about this Tax. This is such a shallow and misleading suggestion. Of course the sky hasn’t fallen in – and it probably won’t for most households or small businesses for some months. But when the electricity bills start rolling in for the next quarter, and when the so- called compensation for those lucky enough to receive it has dried up, we will start to see the real effects of the Carbon Tax. This week I met with a local brick distributor, who has received notice from his suppliers that the cost of bricks will increase by from July 1, in part as a result of the Carbon Tax. This will affect the cost of building a home. But the real pain for those building their dream home will be felt in another 12 months, when concrete and steel manufacturers, who are currently recipients of the Gillard Government’s ‘bail out’ package, are forced to pass on the cost to consumers. The cost of building a $300,000 home could increase by as much as $15,000. What few are realising is in 12 months time, the Carbon Tax is legislated to increase, and will increase again the following year. So if the cost of living gets tough for households this financial year because of the Carbon Tax, I am most concerned that it will only get worse the following two years. Small Town visits: The Parliamentary winter break means I have more time to spend out and about in the Calare electorate, and I look forward to spending as much time as possible on the road meeting constituents, community groups and visiting local businesses and organisations. Next week I will be taking my mobile electorate office on the road, visiting the two opposite ends of the electorate, particularly the smaller towns where residents do not have the same opportunities for face to face communication with their local MP. I’ll be available for constituent meetings in Capertee, Cullen Bullen and Glen Davis in the eastern end of the electorate, and Trundle, Tullamore and Bogan Gate in the west. Contact my office for times and locations. No appointment is necessary – come along for a chat or discuss any Federal related issues that may be concerning or affecting you. Volunteer Grants: Applications are now open for the 2012 Volunteer Grants, with grants of between $1000 and $5000 available. A total of $16 million is up for grabs for volunteer organisations, to assist with the purchase of equipment, the provision of volunteer services, reimbursement of volunteers’ fuel costs incurred while completing volunteer work, or to cover transport costs for volunteers with disabilities, or for the cost of training. Applications close 25 July. Contact my office or visit

TENNIS ANYONE??? A tennis clinic will be held at the Canowindra tennis courts on Thursday 12 July from 10am until 12pm. Tennis Australian Club Professional coach Helen Garratt will be conducting the clinic. Helen has been coaching in Cowra for 16 years and has previously run coaching lessons in Canowindra. Helen has 25 years of coaching experience in Australia and overseas in USA and Germany. As a junior Helen was a top 10 Victorian ranked junior and played the Australian Open Junior event from 1986 until 1988. She then moved onto the senior ranks where she played in the qualifying draw in the 1988 Australian Open at Melbourne Park and obtained a world ranking in the 600s in both singles and doubles. Helen and her assistants would like to pass on their knowledge to Canowindra juniors. The one day clinic will incorporate the MLC Tennis Hotshots program which is aimed at kids using the philosophy of having fun whilst learning tactics, techniques and developing social skills. Modified equipment such as low compression ball and smaller nets are used and the children advance to the big court when they are ready. There will be awards and encouragement prizes throughout the clinic. Enrolments are to be made to Helen Garratt on 0407 139 164 or email your child’s name, age and contact details to
