BEHIND EVERYMAN... The women who are involved in rugby league in our town were acknowledged at a social function that honoured the importance of women's participation in the sport over the years. The 2012 Harvey Norman Women in League celebration held an invitation only dinner in Bathurst Tuesday 26 June, only one of four official events for the year. The Women in League initiative was established in 2007 to celebrate and acknowledge the role of women in the game of Rugby League. The programme aims to empower, incentivise and inspire women at all levels and in all roles. Women in League also reflects on how much Rugby League is a part of family and social life for so many Australians, especially in country town. Congratulations ladies, the help you provide is invaluable for rugby league to prosper in our town.
READ TRIPLET UPDATE In just over three months of fundraising, Jemimah Read announced Thursday 28 June: "We have reached our target!! Offline and online donations are over $95,000! We are *very* grateful for the generosity of so many people. We have been able to purchase a new Toyota Hiace with the funds (picked it up today)! And we have enough to get the van modified for full accessibility! Assuming we can secure part-funding from the government, we also have enough to purchase the three new specialised wheelchairs. BUT: We have some media commitments that require this page (on the Everyday Hero website) to still be up. Any donations received from now on will be put aside for the future needs of Anwen, Mahalah and Gideon Read. SO.. a BIG *Thank you very much* to everyone who has helped us realise this monumental goal! With much gratitude; Jem Read. xo

ORGANIC AWARDS: A GROWTH INDUSTRY A local organic farm that was planned and created over 15 years ago is being recognised at state level by becoming one of three finalists in the inaugural 2012 NSW Organic Pioneers Award. “A top field of applicants across a broad cross -section of the organic industry applied to enter the inaugural NSW Organic Pioneers Award,” said NSW DPI’s Deputy Director General Agriculture NSW Michael Bullen. The finalists in line for the prestigious award to be announced on July 19 are: • Rob Fenton, Albury: head teacher at the National Environment Centre (NEC), of Riverina Institute of TAFE who established and runs the certified organic farm at the NEC and the organic farming teaching program. The 180 ha NEC organic farm produces lamb, free range pork, chicken and eggs, olives, vegetables, herbs and honey. • Sam Statham, Canowindra: Sam’s family business ‘Rosnay’ is a certified organic farm producing wine grapes (20ha vineyard), olives (10ha) and figs (1ha). Value added products include wine, olives in brine, olive paste, figs in syrup, fig preserve, and fig syrup. • Joyce Wilkie and Michael Plane, Gundaroo: turned their small area organic farm into a thriving vegetable, fruit, egg and tool business that has inspired and helped other gardeners and farmers to grow organically – and supported a family and modern lifestyle for three decades. The 2012 Organic Pioneers Award winner will be announced at Sydney’s SUSTAIN Expo (formerly the Organic Expo and Green Show) at Moore Park on Thursday 19 July. The winner will receive a travel bursary to the value of $6,000 to investigate organic enterprises or research facilities of their choosing. Judges for the Award are Professor Stuart Hill (Uni of Western Sydney); Andre Leu (Chair of the Organic Federation of Australian, OFA); and David Mason (NSW DPI Urban Agriculture Leader).

www.tastecanowindra.com.au The "Images of Gaskill Street" exhibition will remain on display at taste until the end of July. This exhibition has been so popular we have decided to keep it on show. The images have been taken at dusk and dawn over the past year, and photographer Steven Mullarkey has processed the images and digitally manipulated them to get a specific style that draws out the depth and character of our beautiful main street.
