Biggest: Morning Tea is being hosted by the Community Health Centre again this year outside Bill Paul's Carpet Centre on Thursday 24 May from 10am. One of Australia’s most popular fundraising events, it plays a vital role in raising money towards Cancer Council’s work in research, prevention and support, so come along & support this great cause, have a scrummy morning tea & buy a ticket or 2 in the raffle. Cabonne: Council wishes to advise that its draft 2011-2012 Draft Delivery Program 2012-16 & Operational Plan 2012-13, Draft Budget and Fees & Charges 2012-13 will be available for public inspection and comment from 8 May 2012 until 5pm on 5 June 2012. The redevelopment of the Canowindra swimming pool is one of the big ticket items in the draft Cabonne Council budget that Mayor Bob Dowling has described as one of the best in the Council’s history. A total of $1.7m has been allocated to the revitalisation of the pool which will involve converting the 33m pool to a 25m lap pool, revamping the children’s pool & building a new water play area. The upgrade will also include additional shade areas, a club room & storage area, solar heating, plant upgrade, repairs to the concrete concourse & new fencing & landscaping. VOLUNTEERS: COMMUNITY VISITORS SCHEME The Community Visitors Scheme (CVS) aims to enrich the quality of life for residents in aged care facilities, who may be socially isolated or lonely, and who would benefit from a friendly visitor. In Canowindra the CVS in ran in conjunction with Moyne Eventide Home. Our volunteer visitors visit once a fortnight and are matched, where possible, with a resident according to shared interests, common background and potential compatibility. Community visitors are volunteers who care about older people, give willingly of their time and bring a smile to the face and a song to the heart of a lonely older person. Currently we are looking for people to join our lovely team of volunteers in Canowindra. Are you willing to give your time to visit an older person living in an Aged Care facility? If you are a person who has something to offer our older generation, and have some time to spare, we would love to hear from you. To celebrate our Community Visitors and their special friends, HACC will be having a morning tea on Wednesday 23 May 2012 at Moyne Eventide Home, Canowindra at 10am. NEW SECRETARY FOR SHOW SOCIETY Thanks to Becky Neville (above left, with Lynne Russell, Treasurer) for putting her hand up for the position of Secretary with the Canowindra Show Society. Becky is a 23 year old mother of Jamie, 19 months, with partner Daniel Bowman, and works Monday to Friday as a carer for Cabonne Family Day Care. Becky is keen to keep the momentum of the Show going and will help President Ashley Bayliss and the rest of the committee achieve another successful Canowindra Show this year. The Standard Instrument and any such environmental planning instruments or directions substantially govern the content and operation of the Draft LEP and, therefore, any public submission made pursuant to Section 67 of the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979 should be made having regard to this fact. CANOWINDRA: READY, SET, READ! Yes, it’s that time of year again...the third annual Canowindra Community Reading Day in being held on Tuesday 22 May 2012, at Canowindra Services Club Function Centre and Memorial Park. 2012 is the National Year of Reading, and according to the 2006 Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey, nearly half of all Australians (46%) don’t have the literacy skills they need to cope with the complex demands of everyday life and work in the emerging knowledge-based economy. Yes, it’s true! You can see for yourself at www.abs.gov.au/ ausstats/abs@.nsf/mf/4228.0 So, what is literacy? Our children develop literacy from when they are born. Literacy is more than just reading or writing. It is being able to use language through speaking and listening, reading and viewing, drawing and writing. Literacy gives people power and choices. This year the Canowindra Community Reading Day is focusing once again on ideas for parents, grandparents and the community to be a part of helping children on the road to lifelong literacy. Activities planned for the day include book readings, presentations by local artist Carissa Ramsay on the inspiration for her paintings, story- telling by Noel Christian, face painting, music and a dramatisation by the Canowindra High School students! The Canowindra Community Reading Day will commence at 10am and finish with a Sausage sizzle around 12noon. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in for some fun and learning. The plans are in place, the books are ready, and all we need is you!
