GOOLOOGONG REMEMBERS OUR ANZACS

Despite the chilly weather there was an excellent turn-out for this year’s Anzac Service in the park. Ex-servicemen, family of ex-servicemen and school children took part in the March, from the Memorial Clubrooms to the park where the official service took place. John Thomson (MC) drew our attention in his Prologue to the sacrifices made by service men and women in past and present conflicts. He also reminded us that February, 2012 was the 70th anniversary of the Japanese bombing of Darwin – a close shave for Australia. Community members and children contributed as drummers, poetry readers, with prayers and hymns. Janet Moxey led the singing and Ken (Gooloogong’s favourite Anzac bugler) made his annual pilgrimage to help enhance the day! The Commemorative Address was given by Gooloogong boy and Vietnam Veteran Peter Beath. Peter brought home the futility of war with reference to two dozen local Gooloogong boys who served in World Wars I and II, Vietnam, Malaya and Indonesia (at least one of whom never returned. See page 3). According to Peter, our little village has ‘served above and beyond its weight’ in defence of our country. He expressed his sincere hope that politicians, on all sides, might

some day learn from history. Top: Kylie Reeves, John Thomson, Mitchell Clark and Marie Sargent contribute to the Commemorative Service Bottom: Peter Beath.
